Remembering George Chapman, Founder and Chief Executive Officer

George served as the Chief Executive Officer since the company’s inception in January 2018 until his passing in March 2023. He was responsible for the overall vision and guidance of the company. George was a founding member of ReNew and a member of its governing boards.

Prior to his service with ReNew, George served Health Care REIT (now Welltower) from 1995 to 2014, when he retired from his role as the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer.  Under his leadership, Health Care REIT’s market capitalization rose to $15.5 billion from $394 million and enterprise value increased from $633 million to $25.9 billion.  He facilitated the growth of the company to be the largest healthcare REIT, investment grade rated, a member of the S&P 500 and the 8th largest REIT.

George served on the boards of National Storage Affiliates (NYSE:NSA), a self-storage REIT, OnShift, a private equity backed company focused on human resource solutions for post-acute and seniors housing and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts on two separate occasions.

George received his BA from Cornell University and JD from the University of Chicago Law School.

John has served as the Chief Investment Officer since the company’s inception in January 2018. He led establishment of the company’s underwriting process and standards. John is responsible for developing and implementing the company’s investment strategy and oversees due diligence, acquisitions and development. John is a founding member of ReNew and a member of its governing boards.

Prior to his service with ReNew, John served Welltower in various capacities from 2002 to 2017. Most recently as the Senior Vice President – Business Development – Senior Housing, he was primarily responsible for managing current relationships, as well as developing new relationships and identifying and structuring new investment opportunities to help drive the growth of the company. He led the underwriting team from 2012 to 2015, a key growth period for the company, and was instrumental in structuring the first RIDEA-compliant transaction in the senior housing space in 2010, which helped Welltower grow by over $25 billion from 2010 to 2017.

John began his career as an Analyst with Dana Commercial Credit, a diversified finance and leasing company, where he worked from 1998 to 2002.

He continues to be very active in industry associations including the American Senior Housing Association, Argentum and National Investment Center (NIC).

John holds a BBA from the University of Toledo and MBA from Bowling Green State University.

Jay has served as the Chief Operating Officer since the company’s inception in January 2018. He led the build-out of the company’s systems and infrastructure. Jay is responsible for the overall operations of the company including asset management, IT systems, people, enterprise risk management and compliance. Jay is a founding member of ReNew and a member of its governing boards.

Jay has over 20 years of experience in real estate capital markets, investments and operations. Prior to his work with ReNew, he was Chief Financial Officer of Miller Diversified, a real estate investment and services firm.

Before joining Miller Diversified, Jay served Welltower from 1996 to 2000 and again from 2006 to 2016, most recently as a Senior Vice President. Over the course of his tenure at Welltower, Jay served in a variety of capacities including investments, capital markets/finance and operations. Additionally, he established and ultimately led the 17-million-square-foot medical office building platform.

In between his time at Welltower, Jay attended graduate school and served as an Associate and Vice President in the real estate investment banking group at Lehman Brothers.

Jay holds a BBA from the University of Colorado and MBA from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Steve has served as the Chief Financial Officer since the company’s inception in January 2018. He led efforts to launch the company and secure initial and ongoing growth capital. Steve is responsible for leading the company’s capital-raising efforts and representing the company with multiple stakeholders. He oversees capital markets, investor relations, finance, accounting, tax and treasury. Since inception, he has raised over $2 billion of capital, funding the acquisition of nearly 100 communities across 19 states. Steve is a founding member of ReNew and a member of its governing boards.

Prior to ReNew, Steve served Welltower in various capacities from 2006 to 2017, most recently as Treasurer. During his tenure, he raised over $25 billion in capital through a combination of common equity, unsecured notes, preferred equity, convertible debt, property level debt and bank financing. He maintained credit rating agency relationships and secured BBB+ equivalent upgrades by all three agencies. He managed corporate banking relationships, presented at numerous conferences and road shows, and managed all treasury activities.

Steve holds a BBA and MBA from the University of Toledo.
